When you’re sitting around the Christmas tree with family this year, especially if you are lucky enough to still be in the presence of your grandparents or parents, you might want to take the opportunity to get to know more about them. And no, not just their political take on Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton or global warming or the Dakota Access pipeline. Rather, really get to know them: who they were growing up, what their hopes and dreams were, how they spent their time, how they dressed, who their friends were.

“If your grandparents are still alive, embarrass them and yourself. Try to think about the things you really want to know about and ask them,” said Michael Chabon, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author whose newest book, Moonglow, is a novel about his grandfather’s life told as a memoir.

Chabon talked about the book and his career as a novelist with fellow novelist Ann Patchett before a packed theater of fans at the Nashville Public Library in Downtown Nashville on Sunday.
